Wake Up Space Cadets

Bush's talk on moonbase and manned mission to Mars is just what a dopehead might say dreamily while blowing smokes.  The total bill is likely to reach 1 trillion dollars.  Where is the money?  There is no money and, even if there was, NASA is not going to see much of it.  Instead, NASA will be asked to sacrifice its other programs to chase this pair of smoke rings.  Meanwhile, our children will be forced to cast aside the growing burden of social security, leaving us old and poor.  Bush opened this can of hoopla because he is afraid of ending up like his father in the upcoming election.  Wake up I say.

By this logic, the 15th and 16th century explorers wasted their time - clearly, there was nothing worth finding past Europe.
Cost difference alone makes that a bad analogy. Back then, any reasonably wealthy merchant house could have financed an expedition. Now, only US could possibly afford to do this. There is also no possibility of riches nor habitable land as rewards. While space technology advancement is a reward of sort, the money is better spent on nano-tech and bioengineering IMHO.

But all that is beside my point which is that Bush is just talking and has no intention of carrying it out. By the time the financial and technological problems start to get serious, Bush will be back home in Texas after screwing America for four more years.
You are making the mistake of assuming that a government led effort is the only way of achieving this. It's not. IMHO, the government should mostly be out, other than offering prizes.
