Anime of Despair

I am not into sad movies but, if you are, you should watch Grave of the Fireflies, a japanese anime about two war orphans.  It not only has a sad ending, but the anime starts with both of the orphans dead.  Just reading the storyline was enough for me to require tissues and a stiff drink.  I am a chicken when it comes to sad movies because they tend to crack me open like an oyster.

Ah: we had just been relishing *Totoro* (which turned out to be THE perfect movie to relax our then 1-year old while she sat through breathing treatments) and I'd read that *Grave of the Fireflies* and *Totoro* had opened together in Japan. This left us in tears. I still cannot imagine what watching that double-feature would have been like.
If you love pathos (and all true movie-lovers do) crack open a bottle of cheap red wine and DVD "Seabiscuit" in the anonymity of your living room. And bring on the napkins.
I guess I am not a true movie-lover. I only watch movies with happy endings. This is why I didn't watch Titanic. In particular, I hate movies that makes you fall in love with characters (i.e. Setsuko in Grave of the Fireflies) and then proceeds to kill them. If I watched such movies, it would be worse than being runover by a drunk driver and then being accussed of murder. Yikes!
Consider it as exercise for the limbic system, do you some good, shake up the foundation a little...
