Switched to Trillian

Yesterday, I had to add Yahoo IM client to communicate with team members of a project I've just joined.  With three IM clients running (MSN, AIM, and Yahoo), I had three contact lists and UIs to get confused with.  Yikes.  Then I remembered Trillian which supported all three IM protocols.  It took me about 5 minutes to replace the three IM clients with Trillian.  So far, I've had no problem at all and am happy with it.

Gaim!

I've been a happy Trillian user for sometime (I make a lot of use of the built in IRC too), my biggest gripe now is having to run a separate Skype client. I wish they'd license the tech to 3rd parties.
Uh oh...

You are not vulnerable if you don't accept IM messages from strangers. You are, however, vulnerable if a Trillian-aware worm infects one people on your buddy list.
I'll second the Gaim recommendation. I especially like that I can point all the services at my own servers.
for some reason i recall gaim's windows ui as being supremely horrible.
